It was an early Sunday morning when we headed to Morong, Bataan to witness and take part in the annual Pawikan Festival celebration last November 30, 2014. Our dynamic Mayor Alicia D. Pizarro was the usual advocate for protecting our environment and nature. She is always dynamic and supportive with these kinds of activities that help Mother Earth and its all wonderful creation to be protected. Thus, thru her leadership, off we went to this amazing event.
There were many school and baranggay participants from the different municipalities of Bataan. There was the annual much-awaited street dancing with all the dancers dressed up in fancy and creative costumes. The town of Orani bagged the championship, Pilar got second place, and Morong was in third. Of course, the yearly heart-touching releasing of pawikan hatchlings to the sea where they truly belong and the many contests that enhance skills of the students in the arts and crafts were enjoyed by everyone.
Many native products were also on display for sale at the seashore. There were araro cookies, buko pies, tuyo and tinapa, and many other foods and delicacies native to the province. Young children enjoyed the clean and warm beach waters of Morong as well.
Many community leaders, both from the government and civic groups, especially Governor Abet Garcia, were present to grace the event. It was inspiring to see every Bataeňo present showing concern through his/her small way for the pawikans which have become endangered to survive to more years and to show love for Mother Earth in general.
